Strawberry Thief     

A famous design created by William Morris in 1883.

The design depicts a bird, usually thought to be a blackbird, swooping down to steal strawberries from a vine.

Characterized by its intricate swirling patterns and rich colors, the design became one of Morris's most popular and enduring works and remains a much-loved symbol of the Arts and Crafts movement.

Inspiration for the creation of "Strawberry Thief"

William Morris, an artist and poet in the 19th century, lived in the countryside of Oxfordshire, England.

One leisure morning, he happened to see birds jumping up branches and secretly picking strawberries in his yard. He was immediately moved by this vivid and lovely picture and determined to keep this scene forever.

So he carefully painted these "Strawberry Thieves", with lively birds presented in axial symmetry, fine and flexible summer vines, brilliantly blooming stamens, and bright strawberries.

Later, Morris engraved his own design on the printing plate, and used indigo plant dyes, cochineal red, mallow yellow, etc. to print a beautiful textile with complex and exquisite patterns but natural interest.

This "Strawberry Thief" eventually became one of Morris' most famous and commercially successful textile designs, and was permanently collected in the Victoria and Albert Museum in the UK.
